Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.

On Sunday the iPhone Dev Team reported progress on the iPhone 4S baseband unlock as 'very promising', and tonight @musclenerd has tweeted the iPhone 4S baseband bootrom has been dumped. This is a significant step in producing an unlock for the iPhone 4S, and will most likely come as an update to the unlocking tool ultrasn0w.

In the meantime, users holding out for an iPhone 4S unlock should stay away from iOS 5.xx firmware updates via iTunes. Stay tuned!

Apple Stores to Celebrate World AIDS Day as Sydney Apple Logo Turns (RED)

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.

As noted by ifoAppleStore, Apple Stores are participating in World AIDS Day efforts, to take place on December 1st. Retail stores will focus their attention on (RED) products that contribute towards the AIDS fight in Africa:

According to sources, on Thursday a select group of Specialists will be wearing and promoting the (RED) iPod nano, with a portion of the $129/$149 price going to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. Also, managers and store greeters who normally carry iPads for work will have (RED) Smart Covers protecting the devices. On the product shelves, signs will promote the Beats by Dr. Dre Solo HD Headphones that are also part of the (RED) product line. There is also a special (RED) iTunes gift card available in the stores. Apple initially said 10 percent of (RED) gift card purchases would go to the charity, but now does not disclose how much of (RED) product purchases is donated to the Global Fund

As posted by @buckleup, the Apple Store in Sydney, Australia has changed its Apple logo to red for World AIDS Day:

Product (RED) started in 2006, when U2′s Bono approached Steve Jobs for another collaboration. As revealed in the Steve Jobs biography, Jobs was never interested in philanthropy and opposed the traditional method of the campaign's mantra to put company names in parantheses. Steve Jobs didn't want to see something like this: (APPLE)RED. Walter Isaacson writes:

"I don't want Apple in parantheses," Jobs insisted. Bono replied, "But Steve, that's how we show unity for our cause." The conversation got heated–to the F-you stage-before they agreed to sleep on it. Finally Jobs compromised, sort of. Bono could do what he wanted in his ads, but Jobs would never put Apple in parantheses on any of his products.

So that's how the Apple avoided having its name in parantheses for the Product (RED) campaign.

There's no word whether other locations will follow suit–keep your eyes peeled tomorrow. That (RED) logo looks pretty awesome.

Regarding Carrier IQ and customer insight mining

Carrier IQ is software that manufacturers and/or carriers stealthily embed in mobile devices in order to collect everything from location to behavioral (usage) data. How much data they collect, and to what level of granularity, it's hard to tell, as is what they do with it both locally on the device and transmitted back to their servers.

It's in the news recently because it's been discovered on Android and iOS devices, but Carrier IQ, and stuff like it, have been used for years. Knowledge is power, after all, and the moment a company can do something that they think gives them tactical advantage, they likely will.

They might use it to try and detect crashes, loss of signal or packets, or other technical information that could help them make better products or services. They might use it to see which OS features you use most and least often, how you typically enter or exit apps and features, how many apps you download and how often, and for how long, you use them. They might sell this information to to partners and third party developers so they can improve and adjust their products, or learn about their competitors' users. (I explained how this works in more detail a while back in regards to Siri.)

They might anonymize it, aggregate it, and runs metrics or analytics off terabytes of the stuff. They might drill down to a single, known user, Person of Interest — or Big Brother — style. We don't know, and that's a big part of the problem. Lack of disclosure leads to uncertainty about the motives and that leads to feelings of violation.

Does that mean it's wrong to feel violated? Certainly not, but right now a lot of the attention is being focused on Carrier IQ and that's a lot like blaming a gun — what you really want is the shooter. It's the carriers and the manufacturers who are implementing Carrier IQ.

And they're not alone. Think some game companies don't monitor your behavior while you're playing, figure out when you leave them game, then try to adjust levels so you keep playing longer?

Apps provide accounts and online services so that you get online and use them, and they can compile data based on your usage. It's called customer insight and it's being done more and more often, in more and more sophisticated ways.

Carrier IQ is just making headlines, but it's a much bigger, much more important issue than any one vendor.

You want the shooter, and you want to know why and at what they're shooting.

Siri "pro-life bias" debunked

Siri "pro-life bias" debunked

TUAW's Chris Rawson did the inconceivable — actually looking into claims that Apple's virtual assistant, Siri might have been programmed with a "pro-life bias" before posting them. And surprise, surprise, he found them to not even be worth the link-bait pixels they were posted with.

Short version: Siri is a front end to internet search engines. It'll return the results of those search engines however good or bad they may be. Now Apple can be blamed for side-stepping Google and using a search engine that returns poor results for these specific queries (and likely others), but they don't run the search engine. So, sorry, if you're looking for something to seethe about, turn your attention away from Apple and towards news outlets not doing their job.

Long version: See the source link below.

The City of Riverside Spent $3500 on This Video to Lure an Apple Store

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.

If you have an Apple Store in your city, consider yourself lucky. Here in Vancouver, we have four locations (with a rumoured fifth location coming) for a population of roughly 578,000 people. Each location is no more than 25 minutes away from the next. You can never have enough Apple Stores.

Riverside is the sixth largest city in California but they have one thing missing–an Apple Store. So what's a city to do? Mayor Ron Loveridge and his City Council decided to spend $3500 to make a video showcasing the love they have for Apple products and how they would mutually benefit if Apple setup a retail shop there. There are three other Apple Stores nearby, but the closest is 40 kilometres (25 miles) away, clearly too far for Riverside.

Check out the video below–is Riverside worthy of an Apple Store (nice choice of Gary Glitter's 'The Hey Song')?

comScore: Canada Has 8 Million Smartphone Users Led By RIM, Apple and Google

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.

comScore has released their Canadian mobile report for September 2011. Canada now has 20.1 million cell subscribers aged 13 and older, and 8 million of those users have smartphones (40%), an increase of 7% compared to March of 2011.

Samsung is the Leading OEM for Smartphones and Regular Phones

In terms of OEM hardware leaders for both regular phones and smartphones combined, Samsung ranked number one with 25.2%, LG next with 20%, RIM with 14.3%, Apple with 12%, and Nokia at 10.1%. It's easy to assume the majority of the regular devices from Samsung and LG are mostly 'dumb phones'.

Apple Trails RIM in Smartphone Platform Market Share

In terms of smartphone platforms leaders for September 2011, RIM continues to lead the way, with Apple following in a close second. Note the massive surge by Android, as they more than doubled compared to similar stats from March 2011 (changes in brackets):

RIM: 35.8% (-6.2)
Apple: 30.1% (-0.09)
Android: 25% (+12.8)
Symbian: 4.2% (-2.2)
Microsoft: 3.2% (-1.9)
Apple dipped just under 1%, most likely due to the numerous models of Android units offered by carriers in Canada. These models are either free on contract, or cheaper than what it costs to obtain an iPhone 4 or 4S, although the 3GS is now free. RIM continues to decline, alongside Symbian and Microsoft.

Back in March 2011, it was also revealed by comScore the iPhone 4 was the most popular cellphone in Canada, with 516,000 users. No update was provided in this report for the number of cellphones being used.

It'll be interesting to see updated numbers in the next report as it will include iPhone 4S numbers, along with further growth from Android.

Microsoft Wants You to Give Windows Phone a Chance

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.

Microsoft is three years behind the competition and is trying to erase consumers bad memories of previous devises. A few weeks back they built a giant Windows Phone in New York's Herald Square, and earlier this week they launched a cheeky HTML5 based mobile site that invites Android and iPhone users to sample its Windows Phone OS.

By visiting http://aka.ms/wpdemo you will be tunneled into a web based emulation of Windows Phone. The demo, which works surprisingly well, allows you to tap and swipe your way through some Windows Phone apps, such as messaging and e-mail.

Interaction is limited to pre-programed demos and you don't get the full experience of Live Titles, for instance. Still, I think this is a great idea from Microsoft. Especially as a way to convince people that 7 isn't 6.5. Will it convince me to drop my iPhone for a Microsoft device? — No.

What do you think of the Windows Phone demo?

Thanks to Wittgensteinian Alex C. for the pointer.

2011 Holiday Guides: iPhone and iPad gifts for gamers

With full, fast internet access and apps aplenty, the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad are pretty much perfect for students of all ages. If you're looking for a gift for the student (or students) in your life, from elementary to high school to university, there are a ton of accessories and apps to choose from. Here are some of our favorites!

Don't need anything for a student? Check out the recommendations anyway, something great might still catch your eye. If not, no worries, check out one of our other 2011 holiday gift guides!

Awesome hardware and accessory gifts for students

There's nothing like something real to unwrap, not just for the little ones in elementary school, but even the big ones home for the holidays. No matter how old, their faces light up just the same.

iOS devices

Does you special student not have an iPod touch or iPad yet? Maybe even an iPhone if they're going off to college and need to stay connected? Not sure which one you should get? Not a problem! Start here:

OtterBox Case

Students are busy and active, so a protective case is a must. Over the past several years that I've spent as both a student and an instructor, I have seen a countless number of iPhones and iPads fall to the floor. I've also seen my share of skateboard wrecks that send iPhones on a tumble and flimsy backpacks (that carry iPads) take hard falls to the concrete. The devices protected with OtterBox have always survived these tragedies. OtterBox makes 4 different series that offer different levels of protection.

  • Defender Series is the mother of all cases. Its multiple layers of protection will protect your student's iPhone and iPad from just about everything. It does add a significant amount of bulk, however.

  • Reflex Series offers iPhone and iPad protection from falls and is inspired the crumble zone of a car. It's much less bulky than the Defender Series, but will still protect against the inevitable tumbles to the ground. (This series is my personal favorite).

  • Commuter Series is the slimmest option from OtterBox. But despite it's thin and stylish look, the Commuter Series will protect your student's iPhone from scratches, bumps and shocks.

  • Impact Series is the most affordable option from OtterBox. This compression molded silicone skin will protect your student's iPhone from scratches and bumps.

Just figure out the best blend of protection and cost, and then let them head back to school in safety!

Bamboo Stylus

Once you student has a great school app like CaptureNotes2 (see below), she's going to want a better note-taking method than her finger. The Bamboo Stylus will rock her world.

There a many styli out there to choose from, but we recommend the Bamboo Stylus because it's design is both functional and beautiful. It's weighted just right and is the perfect thickness. The length is also perfect – shorter than an average pen, but long enough to be comfortable to hold.

Any serious notetaker needs a Bamboo Stylus.

Jawbone JAMBOX

Did you know that students love music but have very little space for good speakers? Of course you do, which is why you understand why the Jawbone JAMBOX will be an amazing gift for your student. This tiny package delivers huge sound at up to 85 decibels. It's completely wireless, making it simple for your student to play music over Bluetooth and even bring along to the party study session at his friend's place.

AirPrint Printer: Epson Artisan 730 Color Inkjet All-in-One

Every student needs a printer, but since your student is an iPhone or iPad wielding student, she needs an AirPrint compatible printer. For printing out everything from an elementary school book report to a high school project to a college term papers, not to mention scanning things for said activities, and printing photos to decorate her room at home or at the dorm, the The Epson Artisan 730 Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer has got her covered. Since the printer is AirPrint compatible, she'll be able to write her papers from her iPad and print it directly from her iPad. If she takes a great picture with her friends on her iPhone or iPod touch, she can immediately make a couple prints to give to them. It's low profile is also perfect for small, already crammed student rooms.

Don't get your student just any printer, get her an Epson Artisan 730 Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer.

Perfect software gifts for students

While wrapping paper is nice, nothing is faster to buy or easier to ship than software. Whether you load it up for them on their brand new device, or send it half way across the world, it'll always get there on time and ready to use.

Note taking apps: CaptureNotes2

A huge part of a student's life is spent taking notes. After taking notes in class, some students head back to their dorm and take more notes on their notes! Simplify your student's life with CaptureNotes 2 for iPad.

This gem allows users to type, write and record – at the same time. It's easy to miss important things that an instructor says while frantically taking as many notes as possible, so CaptureNotes makes it easy to flag parts of your notes that make it easy to pick up and listen to that exact part of the lecture at a later time. A disadvantage to typing notes has always been the inability to draw diagrams, but with CatpureNotes you can quickly draw a diagram right there with your typed notes. You can also import PDFs and share to Dropbox.

Really, every student needs this app.

Also check out:

  • Noteshelf is a powerhouse note taking app for iPad that keeps you organized and more. $4.99 – App Store link
  • Elements is a text editor that syncs with Dropbox and has Markdown support. 'Nuff said. $4.99 – App Store link

Productivity apps: Numbers, Pages, and Keynote

Top 10 apps for your new iPhone 4S - Keynote, Numbers, and Pages

Apple's iWork suite, which consists of Keynote for presentations, Numbers for spreadsheets, and Pages for word processing has recently been updated to work with iCloud, so all your documents get stored and synced between your devices (including, eventually, iWork for Mac when Apple updates it). Keynote was built for Steve Jobs so it's absolutely best in class, while Numbers and Pages are easy to use and produce great looking docs.

Also check out:

  • Documents to Go for a more Microsoft Office feel and all-in one solution $16.99 – App Store link
  • Good Reader is a powerhouse for PDF annotating and file management. $2.99 – App Store link

Math, statistics, physics, chemistry, engineering, astronomy, earth, computational, and life sciences, units and measures, dates and times, places and geography, people and history, culture and media, music, linguistics, sports and games, money and finance, socioeconomics, health and medicine… and on, and on, and on… It's the full power of the website nicely packaged for your student's iPhone or iPad.

Siri Stumbles Over Abortion Questions
Nov 30th 2011, 22:25

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.

Siri is being accused of having an antiabortion agenda — at least in New York City and Washington, D.C.. When asked where to get an abortion, the beta personal assistant only produces results for pro-life centres or tells users that it has no knowledge of abortion clinics.

Megan Carpentier, executive editor of The Raw Story, reports that Siri users in the Washington area are directed toward antiabortion pregnancy centers in Virginia and Pennsylvania instead of the nearby Planned Parenthood. Ask in New York City, and Siri will respond: "I didn't find any abortion clinics."

The Raw Story also reports that when a reader asked, "Why are you anti-abortion, Siri?" the app answered, "I just am." There is no corresponding screenshot to substantiate this claim.

So far, Apple hasn't responded to media inquires, so it's unknown if it's just a technical glitch or a deliberate omission on Apple's part.

Norman Winarsky, one of the founders of Siri, told the New York Times that Apple is likely not to blame. "Those answers would be coming from the Web services that Siri is connecting to, not necessarily Apple," he said. Having said that, Winarsky was quick to point out that he had no knowledge of what modifications Apple might have made to Siri after acquiring it in 2010.

In Canada, Siri is unable to perform geography-based searches, so I'm unable to duplicate results.

Daily Tip: How to tethered jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 with RedSn0w
Nov 30th 2011, 21:08

By Allyson Kazmucha, Wednesday, Nov 30, 2011 | No Comments

If you're currently running iOS 5.0.1, you can jailbreak via RedSn0w 0.9.9b8. This one is also tethered like the previous beta versions of RedSn0w for iOS 5. It's also worth noting that unlockers should stay away from this one unless they're okay with being tethered. iPhone 4 users should stay away from any newer stock iOS firmware versions altogether in order to preserve their baseband.

Be advised that not all jailbreak apps and tweaks have been updated to support iOS 5 yet. If you're alright with running tethered and don't mind a few bugs here and there, follow along for a quick walkthrough.

If you've used RedSn0w before, you'll be right at home. It's not too much different than jailbreaking any other firmware version you may have used it for previously.

Devices Supported

  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPod touch 4G
  • iPad 1
  • iPhone3GS
  • iPhone 4 (GSM)
  • iPhone 4 (CDMA)

And I can't say this enough times, if your device is not listed above, please do not attempt to jailbreak any device but the ones listed above. iPad 2 and iPhone 4S users will have to sit this one out.

What you need

  1. First Launch RedSn0w
  2. This version and other newer versions of RedSn0w should automatically detect what version of iOS you are running. No need to manually browse to a firmware file this time. Just click Jailbreak and follow the prompts.
  3. Next RedSn0w will prompt you to only continue when your device is powered off. If it isn't already, power your device off while it's connected to the computer.
  4. Next you will be guided through putting your device into DFU mode. Follow the steps and RedSn0w will take care of the rest.
  5. After RedSn0w finishes doing it's thing, you're done!
  6. Next you may need to perform a tethered boot. If you do, simply open RedSn0w again and click Extras and then Just Boot
  7. Your phone will perform a tethered boot and you should be good to go!

RedSn0w has also thrown in a little bonus for Windows users. You can copy the redsnow.exe file to your desktop or anywhere you like and rename it something like justboot.exe. As long as you have the word "boot" in the file name you can just double click that file to perform a quick tethered boot with RedSn0w.

DraftCraft is a new blogging app for iPad. It supports WordPress, Blogger, and LiveJournal and aims to make blogging as simple as possible. Formatting the text is easy and there's no need to not only know HTML, but you also don't ever even see it. DraftCraft takes care it behind the scenes and publishes your posts how you expect them to look.

DraftCraft is a simple application that can significantly improve your blog posts. Its impressive selection of innovative features helps your writing time to decrease while the quality of your content shoots up – regardless of whether you use WordPress, Blogger or LiveJournal. Key points include:

  • Complete Simplicity: DraftCraft's carefully designed user interface keeps the entire writing process as simple as possible, leaving you free to concentrate on your results, and not how you reach them
  • Streamlined Publishing: You can now post to all of your blogs from one place, with the application holding details of your accounts across WordPress, Blogger and LiveJournal
  • Productivity-Enhancing Star System: This feature lets you manage your progress on a variety of posts, encouraging you to get your best ideas down quickly and without worrying about your writing style ('one star' pieces) – before gradually making improvements until you've reached publishable results ('five star' pieces)
  • Advanced Text Editor: Once you've created your content, exercising complete creative control is easy through text formatting (bold, italics, copy-paste etc.) and image insertion
  • HTML-Free: If you're worrying about code, then you're not worrying about writing – so DraftCraft removes the need to think about HTML. When you're ready to upload a post, the application will automatically convert your text into the format required for publication!

DraftCraft is available on the iPad for $3.99.
