Learn arithmetic with Bubbling Math for iPad [Kids Corner]

Bubbling Math is an educational iPad app for children to refine their arithmetic skills. It aims to make math fun by making it a game with levels and rewards. It also breaks down the child's results in the parents section so you can know how your child is progressing.

As a math educator, I firmly believe that the irrational fear and hatred towards mathematics begins at young age and I hope that apps such as Bubbling Math will help give children a positive attitude towards math that carries over into adulthood. I have tried many children's math apps, but not all of them make the cut and remain on my iPad. Bubbling Math has earned permanent residency.

Your child will love to do math tasks – because this is a game – complete with levels, goals, nice graphics and music. Your child can practice all the elementary math operations, and you, as a parent, can set what task to practice.

  • 9 different graphic levels with nice music and sounds – will make it difficult for you to stop your child from solving math tasks
  • Task configuration – easy, but powerful – to help you set what your child will practice – based on his age and skill
  • Parents section – with detailed results – you will know how many tasks your child has finished and you can even view which tasks your child finished incorrectly
  • We are motivating – not only to learn, but motivating to continue with additional tasks, because when each new level is unlocked, your child can also get 3 cups for every level (Bronze, Silver, Gold) – and it is not easy to get a Gold cup!

Bubbling Math is available on the iPad for $1.99.

Foxconn profit drops after tough economy, better-paid staff

Foxconn reports third-quarter loss of profit

Hon Hai Precision Industry, the parent company of Foxconn and the largest contract maker of electronics, has just posted its fourth consecutive drop in profits. Foxconn manufactures multiple electronics devices for companies like Apple, Amazon, Dell, HP, Sony, and numerous others. Third-quarter net income dropped 8.6 percent to $641 million, the company revealed, which is a decrease from the $701 million in the same time period in the previous year.

Hon Hai suffered from a lethargic economic recovery that saw a low demand for computers and game consoles. The margins are expected to improve during the fourth quarter thanks to the release of the iPhone 4S and declining costs as a new factory is being set up, said Kirk Yan from Barclays Capital in Hong Kong.

Last year, Foxconn raised wages for its workers after suicides at its factories were reported, and these larger expenses also contributed to the lower profits.

Unconsolidated sales that don't reflect revenue from subsidiaries saw a non-significant change from the same time period last year, at the equivalent of $22.3 billion.

Hon Hai employs about one million workers and is moving factories more inland in China to be closer to those workers. It is also expanding its plant in Brazil. Its global shipments, meanwhile, climbed 3.2 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier. [via BusinessWeek]

"There has been quite a bit of interesting media and headlines this last week pointing to data related to Samsung's latest earnings and smartphone shipments. Many are making the claim that Samsung is now the number one smartphone vendor by volume," ben Bajarin reports for Tech.pinions. "However, when we dig deeper into the numbers we find a different story."

"First (something that shockingly needs to be continually pointed out), the numbers released in Samsung's earnings of 27.8 million smart phones shipped is product shipped into the channel not sold to consumers," Bajarin reports. "Another differentiating point regarding numbers is that Apple actually releases the number of products sold to consumers where many other companies [including Samsung] do not."

Bajarin reports, "Second, the statement that Samsung is the largest "shipper" of smartphones can only apply to Samsung's Q3 for 2011 not per anum. Apple still sells annually more smartphones than any other manufacturer."

Tiernan Ray reports for Barron's "Stores are taking pre-orders for the phone or creating reservation lists, he found. Power thinks Best Buy is a 'litmus test' for iPhone sales because it's one of the last locations to 'have its supply of iPhone devices normalize.'"

"The days of students lugging around massive backpacks loaded with heavy textbooks are numbered," Ed Sutherland reports for Cult of Mac. "According to a new poll of educational IT directors, signs are strong that within the next five years, all U.S. schools could adopt tablets, many as a replacement for textbooks."

"The good news for Apple is that in education circles (as with most consumers) the only tablet worth considering is the iPad," Sutherland reports. "All 25 educational IT directors surveyed by institutional securities firm Piper Jaffray said they were using iPads. In fact, according to analyst Gene Munster, not a single school reported employees using Android-based tablets."

Ubuntu Linux to get big push on phones, tablets through 2014
Oct 31st 2011, 16:35

Canonical vows Ubuntu becoming relevant in mobile

Canonical leader Mark Shuttleworth on Monday vowed that Ubuntu Linux would be getting a much stronger emphasis on mobile in the future. The company would be pushing developers and partners to go beyond the desktop and develop smartphones as well as tablets, TVs, and in-car systems by the time Ubuntu 14.04 arrives in or near April 2014. Speaking at the Ubuntu Developer Summit, he said there was a "underlying hunger" for an alternative to Android among free, open-source platforms.

Google's $12.5 billion buyout of Motorola had changed "everything," he said. He acknowledged that the current smartphone platform situation, between Android and the iPhone, was mostly a "done deal" but saw it changing over time. The current remarks were only the "start of the conversation," Shuttleworth said.

Ubuntu already has traces of mobile support, such as touchscreen-optimized elements and new ARM support in 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot.

Google has publicly claimed to be keeping Motorola at arm's length and focusing mostly on the patent claims, but it has steadily put out signs that it wants to control the hardware and make Motorola its official design wing. HTC, Samsung, and other partners have been told by Google to publicly support the deal, but they will still end up competing against the very company providing their mobile OS if the Motorola deal is approved.

An Ubuntu mobile platform still faces significant hurdles challenging Android, iOS, or others established in the market. Typically, 'pure' versions of Linux have failed in the market, such as those based on work from the LiMo Foundation. Android is based on Linux but isn't open-source on the same level, since Google regularly refuses to give source code for some versions and doesn't normally allow developers to make contributions back to the main project, instead preferring to hold advantages for itself. CLARIFICATION:

Little hiccup in here regarding PlayBook 2.0

As long as you own a PlayBook, you'll definitely be able to download OS 2.0. It's no different than any other PlayBook update. Done OTA.

BBM – The clarification is that on OS 2.0, there will be no native BBM. To get BBM on your PlayBook, you'll need to own a BlackBerry also, and get it via BlackBerry bridge (as you do now). A future update will make it native (once RIM figures out multiple device management via the BBID.

Apologies!

"Apple expects to increase its capital expenditures 73 percent year over year in fiscal 2012," Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider. "That will bring its projected expenses to $8 billion, significantly higher than the $1.2 billion the company projected back in 2009."

"UBS analyst Maynard Um believes that a significant chunk of Apple's spending increase will be related to new construction projects the company is planning," Marsal reports. "For example, last week it was revealed that the company is planning to build a solar farm across from its massive data center in Maiden, N.C."

Marsal reports, "Apple's solar farm will be placed on 171 acres of vacant land on Startown Road. It will power the $1 billion data center that opened earlier this year and helps to power Apple's online services, including iCloud and iTunes… Another major upcoming project for Apple that Um believes will contribute to increased expenses in 2012 is the company's new 13,000-employee campus in Cupertino. Work on the campus… is expected to begin in 2012, in preparation for an opening in 2015."

"HTC's lowered fall outlook may be a sign it expects to take a blow from the iPhone 4S, analysts pointed out Monday," Electronista reports.

"Its expectation that it would only move 12 to 13 million phones, down from 13.2 million, was likely factoring in the effect of a Sprint iPhone on its sales, Baird analyst William Power said," Electronista reports. "HTC may consider Sprint its most important customer in the US and would want to reflect that in expectations, which were much lower than the 14.5 million phones that Wall Street had expected."

Electronista reports, "Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital echoed this and noted that iPhone 4S sales were still "very strong," cutting into HTC's share. He added that there was a likely extra harm to RIM's BlackBerry."

Using Siri and MailShot Pro to send email to groups
Oct 31st 2011, 17:11

One of the more useful features of Siri on the iPhone 4S is the ability to send email messages by asking Apple's intelligent assistant to do it. Telling Siri to "Email [name or nickname] about [subject]" produces a nicely formatted, but empty Mail message that Siri asks you to complete via dictation. This works fine with sending email to individuals, but what about sending to groups?

Erica Sadun and I pondered this question as we were writing our popular ebook "Talking to Siri: Learning the Language of Apple's Intelligent Assistant." We found the answer in a US$3.99 app called MailShot Pro.

Installing the app on your iPhone 4S lets you create custom groups which Siri can use to send emails to several recipients at once. With a quick tap, you can import individual names from the Contacts app or groups from Address Book on your Mac. You can also add names and email addresses manually. The groups end up in your Contacts list, accessible to Mail (via Siri or directly), FaceTime, Messages, and any app that can use an address from Contacts.

For the OCD folks out there, MailShot Pro includes a nice touch -- being able to sort the names in your group. If you only have a few groups with a handful of people in each group, you might wish to check out the free version of the app -- MailShot. Should you need more groups or have a lot of people in each group, MailShot Pro is available in the App Store with a tap.

TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog: miFrame makes your iPad picture perfect

miFrame makes your iPad picture perfect
Oct 31st 2011, 17:00

I usually don't review iPad stands, but the people from Striped Sail sent me a miFrames for iPad 2 to try out, and I found it quite clever. Unlike traditional iPad stands, the miFrame doubles as a picture frame enclosure.

Most people aren't going to buy an iPad just to use it as a digital picture frame, but those who use that feature (perhaps photo studios or graphic design offices that want to show off their work, not to mention grandmas) the miFrame is a nice choice. The frame/stand comes in black or silver precision-machined aluminum and can be positioned in portrait or landscape orientation. A five-foot USB cable runs from the base and can be plugged in to a power source, like an Apple USB charger, to keep the iPad charged. The long cable provides plenty of reach for positioning the stand just so.

The miFrame doubles as a traditional picture frame. You can slide an 8x10 printed photograph into the frame which will be displayed when you remove the iPad. That way the frame is useful when it's holding an iPad and when it's not.

One of the few drawbacks about the miFrame is that you actually have to snap the frame's border off to get the iPad in and out. It's easy to do and doesn't take too much time, but it would be nice if you could slide the iPad in without removing the frame. Also, the miFrame can't be hung on a wall, which some users might find limiting.

The miFrame is available for the iPad 1 or 2 and costs US$79.99. You can purchase it directly from Striped Sail or through Amazon.

Apple Planning Surge in Retail and Cloud Spending in 2012
Oct 31st 2011, 16:15

Last week, Apple released its annual 10-K report, offering a summary of the company's financial performance and other items of interest for fiscal 2011. One interesting tidbit from the report is gaining some attention for its glimpse into the future, as GigaOM reports on a new research note from UBS analyst Maynard Um addressing Apple's planned capital expenditures (CapEx) for fiscal 2012. From the 10-K report:

The Company's capital expenditures were $4.6 billion during 2011, consisting of approximately $614 million for retail store facilities and $4.0 billion for other capital expenditures, including product tooling and manufacturing process equipment, real estate for the future development of the Company's second corporate campus, and other corporate facilities and infrastructure.

...

The Company anticipates utilizing approximately $8.0 billion for capital expenditures during 2012, including approximately $900 million for retail store facilities and approximately $7.1 billion for product tooling and manufacturing process equipment, and corporate facilities and infrastructure, including information systems hardware, software and enhancements.

The projected 74% increase in capital expenditures is evidence of Apple's commitment to both retail stores other infrastructure needs, many of which are related to Apple's cloud-based initiatives. On the retail front, Apple has noted that it is planning to open forty new retail stores during fiscal 2012, and is also planning to expand or replace a number of its existing stores that are too small to adequately serve customer demand. Other infrastructure needs include cloud-focused facilities like the North Carolina data center where Apple is building a solar farm and the new corporate campus in Cupertino.

Horace Dediu at asymco has taken a different look at Apple's CapEx within the context of iOS device sales, noting that sales have been been closely correlated with CapEx over the past several years. Dediu's conclusion is that the significant increase in budgeted non-retail CapEx points toward Apple expecting yet another year of 100% growth in iOS device unit sales.

New Fifth Avenue cube on Friday; iOS self-checkout coming
Oct 31st 2011, 16:05

Checkout option would be limited to shelf items

Apple may be ready to unveil its overhauled Fifth Avenue cube on November 4th, sources for MacRumors claim. Work on replacing the original cube has been in progress since June, with special accommodations made to allow shoppers to continue entering the store below. The project is estimated to be costing Apple at least $6.6 million, and has seen an original 90 glass panels reduced to just 15.

Possibly coming as soon as November 3rd is an update to the Apple Store iOS app which will allow self-checkout at retail. Purchases will reportedly be billed to a person's iTunes Store account. To prevent shoppers from simply walking out of a store with goods, Apple is expected to use two measures: the first is emailed receipts, which clerks will be able to check. The other is limiting self-checkout to items on shelves, such as iPad and iPhone accessories. Apple keeps Macs, iPhones, iPods and iPads secured in stock until a person asks to buy one.

Apple is meanwhile said to have expanded its in-store pickup program to all 16 Bay Area stores, up from just three San Francisco outlets. Further expansion is expected soon. Another rumored project may soon allow visitors to the online store to send different items from a single order to multiple addresses. The change is expected to come in time for the holiday shopping season, mainly as a way of supporting buying gifts for several people at one time.

Analysts: HTC's lowered outlook bracing for iPhone 4S impact
Oct 31st 2011, 15:15

HTC may anticipate iPhone 4S curbing sales

HTC's lowered fall outlook may be a sign it expects to take a blow from the iPhone 4S, analysts pointed out Monday. Its expectation that it would only move 12 to 13 million phones, down from 13.2 million, was likely factoring in the effect of a Sprint iPhone on its sales, Baird analyst William Power said. HTC may consider Sprint its most important customer in the US and would want to reflect that in expectations, which were much lower than the 14.5 million phones that Wall Street had expected.

Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital echoed this and noted that iPhone 4S sales were still "very strong," cutting into HTC's share. He added that there was a likely extra harm to RIM's BlackBerry.

HTC's unit shipments were still about twice as much as what it managed a year earlier. They still put it above RIM and most other Android makers outside of Samsung.

The connection to the outlook is unlikely to be directly confirmed by HTC, but it does reflect an increasingly established pattern in the US of the iPhone automatically outselling any one Android phone on whichever carrier it reaches. The iPhone almost immediately became Verizon's most popular phone and is still the leader at AT&T. Even the two-year-old iPhone 3GS is more popular at AT&T than any one Android device, the carrier has mentioned in the past.

Sprint hasn't given out its iPhone numbers, but it already said that it broke one-day sales records in just a few hours. Its last record-setter was the HTC Evo 4G in 2010, which trumped this year's Evo 3D and is still the most popular smartphone on Sprint in terms of lifetime results. [via Barron's]

Nov 7 NYC event likely to show Nook Color 2

Barnes & Noble sent invitations to Electronista and other members of the press for its widely rumored November 7 event. The gathering will follow the bookseller's tradition of holding events in its Union Square bookstore in New York City. Nothing is mentioned of the contents other than the Nook logo and promises of a "very special announcement."

The timing supports rumors of a Nook Color sequel or higher-end model arriving at the same time. An upgrade to the former would likely be meant to head off the Amazon Kindle Fire and could jump to a dual-core processor, Android 2.3, or a new design. If a genuine second model, it might be the rumored Acclaim and cost $349, possibly getting a larger screen and more features.

The new Nook, if accurate, will arrive in a much tougher climate, where the Kindle Fire will cost $199 and already costs less than the year-old Nook Color. Barnes & Noble likewise has to face a much tougher climate now that iPads and other tablets are much larger presences. Apple's iBookstore is still smaller than the Amazon or Barnes & Noble stores, but at 180 million downloads is now a significant presence.
