Time Waster of the Month: Slingshot Racing [Video Review]
Jun 6th 2012, 22:28

By Kris Meador on June 6th, 2012 0

For June's Time Waster of the Month I've picked Slingshot Racing from Crescent Moon Games and Snowbolt Interactive.

This is a racing game with some new twists. First, instead of cars, you are racing bobsleds along the ice. Secondly, you use a grappling hook to navigate the turns and adjust your speed.

The basic idea is simple. Tap on the screen to release your grappling hook. Then lift your finger to release it. Depending on your timing you'll either slingshot yourself around the turn quickly, giving your bobsled more momentum — or you'll actually slow yourself down.

It can be difficult to try to explain, so watch my video review to see Slingshot Racing in action.

As I mentioned in the video, there are 64 races to complete. They include time trials, races against opponents and even races to collect cogs as fast as possible.

There is even a multi-player option for up to four people — and you only need one device. Because of this, the multi-player option really is best suited for the iPad and its bigger screen.

Slingshot Racing is a universal app and is available in the App Store for $2.99

Let me know what you think of the slingshot type controls and the game overall.

How To Calibrate The Home Button Of Your iOS Device
Jun 6th 2012, 18:54

By RoryPiper on June 6th, 2012 0

Sometimes it is the simple things that give us so much joy in our day. We came across this great tutorial over at Snapguide, that shows you how to calibrate the Home button on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. Occasionally you may notice that your Home button isn't quite responding the way it should. Apps don't open right away, the app switcher won't reveal quick enough, or Siri is slow when being invoked. In some cases, this can be a hardware issue, but you should try this tutorial. It actually worked for me.

I have my iPod Touch 4G jailbroken, so when the system UI slows down a bit, I just blame it on something I have installed from Cydia. After performing this calibration, I have noticed my Home button is more responsive. There are three simple steps:

1. Open any of the stock apps on your iDevice, like Weather, Maps, or Calender.

2. Press and hold the power button on top, until you see the power off slider appear.

3. Then press and hold the Home button until the power off slider goes away.

That's all there is to it. If it worked for your device, you should now notice a much more responsive Home button. Let us know if this tip worked for you, in the comments below.

iPhone 5 To Sport Thinner Chassis With HD FaceTime Camera [Report]
Jun 6th 2012, 18:28

By Usman on June 6th, 2012 0

Looks like all sorts of rumors regarding Apple's 6th generation iPhone are pouring in today. Earlier, we reported how an analyst believes the next iPhone will indeed have a 16:9 display and now, another report by Apple Insider speculates the iPhone 5 to sport a front-facing camera capable of HD resolution. The report claims that in addition to an HD FaceTime camera, Apple will also adopt a flip-chip (FC) solution for the front-facing camera on the upcoming iPhone, according KGI analyst Mingchi Kuo. The camera's position would also be moved to the middle.

Detailing from the source:

Kuo noted that an HD front camera would better suit the 4-inch display that he expects Apple's sixth-generation handset to have. Currently, the front-facing camera of the iPhone 4S is capable of VGA resolution.

As for the rear-facing camera, Kuo said Apple will likely retain the 8-megapixel camera while improving the aperture range to go up to f/2.2. The iPhone 4S has a maximum aperture of f/2.4. The analyst also predicted that the rear camera on the next iPhone will be noticeable thinner, "making it the most challenging iPhone design yet."

According to his analysis, the new iPhone's rear camera will have a CCM of 5.55mm and a lens TTL of 4mm, down from 6mm and 4.8mm on the iPhone 4S.

Apple is expected to launch the next generation iPhone with a brand new design this fall in either September or October.

Enhanced 3D Google Earth With New UI For iOS Coming Soon [SCREENSHOTS]
Jun 6th 2012, 18:44

By Usman on June 6th, 2012 0

While rumors of Apple's iOS 6 getting an all new 3D Maps app are going hot, Google is planning to enhance its Google Earth with improved 3D images (via The Verge). Google plans to use an automated technology to extract 3D from aerial images which results in stunning 3D maps with very building competely modeled frome street to roof. The source notes that the difference between the new and old Google Earth is like night and day. Google has announced that the new and improved Google Earth will be live soon, demonstrating the new features on iOS as well as Android devices.

According to the source:

To make the images, Google uses planes to take images at 45-degrees from four different angles — flying them in a tightly-controlled pattern with plenty of overlap. Google builds the 3D model off of these many images, using algorithms to create the shape and color of buildings. The process is "fully automated," building the 3D images without any human interactions. The system is intelligent enough to know when a certain image is blocked or shadowed, for example. The company hopes to combine the 2D mapping and vector data with the 3D images to perhaps someday provide vertical location information.

While Google hasn't given any specific date for the new Google Earth's launch, it has mentioned that the new features will cover several cities at the beginning with a goal to have a "very large number" by the end of 2012.

Rogers Prepared For Any New Wireless Competitor with 'Bring it On' Attitude
Jun 6th 2012, 18:30

By Gary Ng on June 6th, 2012 0

Speaking at the Canadian Telecom Summit in Toronto, the president of the Rogers' communications unit, Rob Bruce, said in an interview the company is ready any new wireless competition.

According to the Toronto Star:

"Our view is 'bring it on…As far as competition goes, we've always been a full-speed-ahead competitor and we're ready to go with whoever comes to market."

One area where Rogers was 'disappointed' was the federal government's decision to allow foreign ownership for companies with 10 percent or less marketshare, which in their point of view will have 'no great material effect' on the company.

Rogers maintains Canada is their focus and plans to lead the way in machine-to-machine (M2M) technology ahead of their rivals. M2M technology would allow things such as your smoke detector texting you when it goes off; Rogers says M2M will generate about $400 million for the industry by 2015, according to Bruce.

In their latest 2012 Q1 earnings report, Rogers noted their wireless division was driven by smartphone growth and data revenue.

Today is Google's launch of their Google Maps event, and just prior they have announced the debut of Flight Search for Canada and is available in both French and English:

  • Find flights quickly with results that load instantly in a format that's easy to scan.
  • Discover places to go on a map – see ticket prices for various destinations by surfing the map. You can filter by price, airline, or flight duration.
  • Find the best time to go – click the calendar icon to see what dates will get you low prices.
  • Compare your options by viewing the combination of price and flight duration in a graphical format.

The service allows you to find and book flights from Canadian airports to over 500 international destinations. You can check out the new service here:

I have yet to try out the service but it's nice that Canada gets some love from Google.

Alberta Health Services iPhone App Shows Emergency Wait Times for Calgary and Edmonton
Jun 6th 2012, 16:00

By Gary Ng on June 6th, 2012 0

Alberta Health Services has continued to tout its iPhone app that allows citizens in Calgary and Edmonton to view emergency department wait times, aimed at patients with minor ailments (i.e. earaches). The estimates are based on how long it will take a regular patient to see a doctor after being assessed by a triage nurse.

The project is the first of its kind in Canada (it rolled out last July) and the software borrows similar data used to dispatch ambulances, and is updated every two to three minutes. Wait times are categorized based on emergency departments and urgent care and estimated driving times are also provided based on your location. So far, iPhone and Android versions of the app have been downloaded 3500 times.

Hospitals included as part of the project include: Edmonton's Royal Alexandra Hospital, University of Alberta, Misericordia, Grey Nuns and Stollery Children's hospitals, the North East Community Health Centre, the Sturgeon Community Hospital in St. Albert, Leduc Community Hospital, and Stony Plain's Westview Community Hospital. Hospitals in Fort Saskatchewan and Sherwood Park are set to be added to the program as soon as possible.

According to the Edmonton Journal, AHS sees the project as providing further public info into emergency room waiting times, which have come under scrutiny by government critics.

Nevertheless, this is a fantastic app when you need it, as there's nothing worse than being stuck in an emergency waiting room for hours on end. Being able to choose a hospital with the shortest emergency waiting time is very beneficial for people requiring immediate non-life threatening care.

LinkedIn iOS App Leaks iCal Data; 6.5M Passwords Reportedly Leaked Too
Jun 6th 2012, 16:40

By Gary Ng on June 6th, 2012 0

Another day, and another huge story about an iOS app using your data without you knowing (reminds me of the whole issue with Path). Last night both the New York Times and The Next Web reported your calendar entries are transmitted back to LinkedIn's servers without your permission or knowledge via the LinkedIn iOS app. The discovery was made by mobile security reseachers Yair Amit and Adi Sharabani, set to detail their findings at Tel Aviv University today.

The issue stands with iOS and its opt-in feature that allows users to view their iCal entries within the LinkedIn app. Once users opt-in, LinkedIn automatically sends your calendar data to their servers.

LinkedIn has responded to the calendar 'leak' in a blog post, where they clearly state what they do and don't do with your data:

We Do:

  • We ask your permission before accessing your calendar, this will continue to be an opt-in feature
  • We provide you with a way to turn off the calendar feature at any time in the settings
  • We send calendar data to our server only when the LinkedIn app is launched to be matched with relevant LinkedIn profiles of meeting attendees
  • We send your calendar data to our servers over a secure SSL connection

We Don't:

  • We do not store any calendar information on our servers
  • We do not share or use your calendar data for purposes other than matching it with relevant LinkedIn profiles
  • We do not under any circumstances access your calendar data unless you have explicitly opted in to sync your calendar

We Will Improve:

  • We will no longer send data from the meeting notes section of your calendar event
  • There will be a new "learn more" link to provide more information about how your calendar data is being used

So look for an update to soon arrive to fix this sending of your meeting notes to LinkedIn's servers. In the meantime, you can turn off this feature within the iPhone app via the settings panel.

In a separate story, LinkedIn has apparently been hacked and had 6.5 million encrypted passwords leaked onto a Russian website. LinkedIn responded to these allegations on twitter and are investigating. You should change your password ASAP.

New Report Claims Apple Will Indeed Increase The iPhone Display to 16:9 Aspect Ratio
Jun 6th 2012, 16:48

By RoryPiper on June 6th, 2012 0

Apple Insider is reporting that KGI analyst Mingchi Kuo says the next iPhone will indeed have a larger display. Kuo says the next iPhone with have a 16:9 aspect ratio, in-cell IPS display, measuring 4.08″, and with a resolution of 1,136 x 640. Kuo also says the decision to keep the display width the same will save developers the headache of redesigning their apps to fit the 16:9 ratio, as 4:3 apps could simply be "letterboxed". Kuo is known for having sources deep inside Apple's supply chain, and his predictions in the past have proven to be fact.

Kuo also sheds some light on why the display will be taller and not wider. He says Apple wants to maintain one handed operability. Widening the display would make this difficult, as you would have to stretch your thumb further across to reach the right side of the screen. We have talked about this in the past, discussing why Apple would probably not move away from the 3.5″ screen, but this taller display seems to be a decent compromise. We have created the graphic below, to give you an idea of "thumb reach" on the possible taller display.

A larger display on the next iPhone is probably the biggest and most "hope it's true" rumour right now. The larger, 16:9 display would show movies in their native aspect ratio, would provide more viewing area when typing in portrait, and give us more viewing area in games with touch screen analog controls and buttons.

The next iPhone is expected to be released this fall, and I'm sure we will hear more and more rumours as we get closer to the official announcement. WWDC is less than a week away, where we will get a sneak peek at iOS 6. If a developer's preview is released, we may get some details out of the code, on things like display resolution. We'll keep you updated.

Calypso Crystal – CalypsoRing Leather Case For iPhone 4/4S [REVIEW]
Jun 6th 2012, 15:38

By Usman on June 6th, 2012 0

A lot of iPhone 4/4S owners like to cover their delicate smartphone with luxury cases, most popular of which are the handcrafted leather pouches. A couple of weeks back, we reviewed once such line of premium cases i.e Sena's Elega cases for iPhone 4/4S, in a variety of leather colors and textures. Today, we'll go hands on with another handcrafted luxury leather case, the CalypsoRing for iPhone 4/4S by Slovenia-based Calypso Crystal. Full review after the break!

Features:

  • Precision handcrafted.
  • Specially designed micro fabric inner skin.
  • Strong and light titanium inner enclosure for ultimate protection.
  • Premium chosen Italian leather.
  • U-shaped CalypsoRing made from real silver.

Price:

Review:

Calypso ships its luxury product beautifully packed in a premium black box. It is available in 4 colors i.e Zurich Night (black), Bilbao by Storm (green), Austin Chill (brown) and Bubbly Sydney (yellow). Opening up the box reveals the CalypsoRing case nicely wrapped in a gift paper along with a signed certificate of authenticy and material composition.

The brown colored premium leather CalypsoRing case is undoubtedly the most elegant iPhone 4/4S case I've ever come across. Made with highest quality Italian leather, the precision handcrafted case is lightweight, sleek and stylish. The leather's texture is extremely smooth that gives it a luxurious look. The premium leather feels superb to touch and smells great too.

The case is lined internally with micro fabric that prevents the iPhone from sliding out and at the same time protect the phone's screen. The inner skin is enclosed with a titanium enclosure for maximum protection against bumps and falls. I addition to premium quality Italian leather body, the case is also lined on the outside by a U-shaped CalypsoRing made up of pure sterling silver which is hammered into place in the old-world tradition. The hand polished silver ring truly gives the case an epic touch of luxury.

Using the slip-in leather case is an equally pleasing experience. The iPhone slides in nicely and stays in with just enough grip to prevent it from falling out. A gentle pull is sufficient to take the iPhone out, as opposed to Sena's Elega cases which are a bit too tight out of the box and you actually need the leather to break-in and soften with time. Luckily, no such issues here. The fit is absolutely perfect.

In the end, I must mention that my iPhone 4S has the SGP GLAS.t tempered glass screen protector on it and I'm pleased to report that CalypsoRing case is 100% compatible with it. Even with the thicker screen protector, the iPhone slides in and out nice'n easy.

Conclusion:

Made with some of the finest materials on earth, Calypso Crystal's CalypsoRing case for iPhone 4/4S is a stunningly beautiful high-end case that is both stylish and protective. I would recommend CalypsoRing to all those fashionistas who can afford to pay the higher price tag and would like to flaunt their favorite gadget in a perfectly styled Italian leather case.
