BigBoss updates its SemiTether tweak
Nov 2nd 2011, 16:17

Modified Cydia iconJust a few days ago, BigBoss had released its SemiTether package on Cydia, which is basically a tweak that allows iDevice owners running iOS 5 who have performed a tethered jailbreak to be able to reboot and use their iDevice (minus any unofficial third-party apps, tweaks, and themes) without having to boot tethered using a Mac or PC. There were some issues in the previous version (v0.7.9) of SemiTether that needed to be worked out, so BigBoss has just updated the package to v0.9.1 with increased stability along with a bunch of fixes and new features.

SemiTether 0.9.1 uses Cydia creator Jay Freeman's newly-released version of Mobile Substrate, getting rid of daemon patching altogether, making SemiTether much more stable, and having most of SemiTether's work performed by Mobile Substrate. SemiTether now also protects a user's iOS 5 Notification Center plug-ins and gives a user the option to patch Safari for use when an iDevice is rebooted into a non-jailbroken state. BigBoss is working on patching Mail in the same way, if it turns out to be possible. Lastly, a new app will appear on a user's SpringBoard after installing SemiTether that allows the user to monitor its status and to reapply the tweak if/when necessary.

Although BigBoss notes this is a major update that should fix all previous problems with SemiTether, they also state that Mobile Substrate has been completely rewritten and that users are beta testing these packages and therefore installing them is at their own risk. If you're not worried (and you shouldn't be), SemiTether 0.9.1 is now available in the same separate BigBoss repository on Cydia that you can add via the thebigboss.org/semitether.
