Tiny Token Empires is a strategy game along the lines of Civilization, only Tiny. The objectives are laid out by the game's guide, Planc the Elder. There are the usual conquer and build objectives along with some go-find-this-nifty-item quests.
The game is set in ancient Rome, and your assignment—if you chose to accept it—is to conquer pretty much everything around you, build towns, increase your revenues, and grow your army so you can go out and conquer new territories, build towns…you get the point. Along the way you will be asked to search for special items. The search is successful if you win a challenge. The special challenges, as well as the combat, are a game within a game. The sub-games are grids of tiles where the player either needs to tap two tiles to switch position to match 3 (or more) in a row, or to tap and rotate a cluster to make 3 or more like tokens line up.
Once the items have been found or combat won, you will be given a new task by uncle Planc.
The graphics are clean and interesting, with nice color and plenty of SPQR banners. The main screen has a cool map of the Mediterranean region (maps are cool) and everything is easy to spot and move.
The game within a game bit for the combat was a bit disappointing, but I suppose there is only so much a game can do with this platform. For an empire or civilization building game, Tiny Token Empires is pretty basic. But Planc is mildly entertaining; even more entertaining when you fool around and get a little verbal abuse.
Gameplay Tips
- The map has a zoom feature so you can back out to see the whole of your tiny yet majestic empire or zoom in to the action at hand; be careful to leave yourself a little extra room when you zoom in so you can still move your game pieces.
- Also, get out your glasses for the combat and special challenge game, the programmers aren't kidding when they say Tiny Token.
- Don't forget to read all the instructions Planc gives you. There is some playful chiding from uncle Planc if you aren't doing what the game says you should be doing.
