Iridium AcxessPoint app now available for iOS

Iridium Communications has taken its promised AxcessPoint Mail & Web app (free, App Store) to Apple's iOS platform. As before, users still need to buy one of Iridium's satellite phones and share its data connection over an AxcessPoint Wi-Fi hotspot with an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. The service is time-based, rather than bandwidth, and costs about $1 per minute.

The app itself is free, but the phones cost between $1,000 and $1,500. The connection is said to be just fast enough for e-mail and text access. Typical data speeds are 2.4kbps, but this app is said to make that as much as five times faster for web browsing and 15 times faster for e-mail, according to an Iridium spokesperson. It's most likely using compression. [via CNET]
