Tascam unveils iM2 stereo mic for iOS devices
Nov 24th 2011, 02:00

Capable of capturing 125dB without distortion

Bypassing the preamp already found on most iOS devices, Tascam's new iM2 dock-connector stereo mic for the iPhone 4, iPad and recent iPod Touch family offers recorders the ability to handle noise levels of up to 125 decibels without distortion. The new product uses a pair of condenser microphones borrowed from the company's DR recorder lineup with a 180-degree adjustable joint and also uses its own analog-to-digital converter.

The mic is attached to an iOS device through the 30-pin dock connector, with the capsules set for wide, ambient sound in an A/B configuration. The company promises a high-quality recording app to match the mic, which is available now and sells for $80. The device also features it's own USB charging input, though it normally draws power from the iOS device. Mic level is adjustable with a knob on the side, and the app can record sound from the mic even while the camera is capturing video.
