Another report is suggesting that the next iPhone will incorporate a new "in cell" touch technology for it's touch screen, reducing the thickness even further.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported that this new tech could help Apple reduce the overall thickness of the next iPhone, to compete with other devices already on the market. With a lot of the competitor's devices coming in at somewhere between 7 and 8mm, the iPhone 4S at 9.3mm is significantly thicker. Each redesign of the iPhone has been thinner each time, so I don't see why the next iPhone wouldn't follow that trend. Kuo has also said that this new in-cell touch tech would greatly reduce the number of steps it takes to assemble the iPhone's touch screen, therefore, speeding up production.
As you can see in the diagram above, if Apple were to move away from the glass design and go with the LiquidMetal back, as previous reports have suggested, and use this new in-cell touch technology, the next iPhone could very well come in under 8mm. This also matches the rumours and cases for the "iPhone 5″, that were seen on the internet last year.
The report doesn't make mention of other components that may effect the thickness of the next iPhone, such as the camera. We can assume that Apple will incorporate a camera that is just as good as, or even better than the iPhone 4S. Most iPhone fans are hoping for an upgrade on the front camera, as well. The rumour mill is just getting started and will surely ramp up more and more, as we get through the summer.
