Appidemic

If you need a dedicated to-do list for your movies, this app is a good place to start. There are generally about 100 movies per category, and dozens of categories, so there are plenty of titles from the 1930s up to the present from which to choose.

What is it?

MovieQuest lets you access a movie database, sorted by predefined categories, to catalog movies you have seen and movies you want to see. You can also assign a one star "Favorites" tag to the movies your really like.

How does it work?

To use the app, start tapping the categories you want to search until you get the list of titles. \ Touch the title of a movie you are interested in and you have access to the info screen which shows movie details such as run time, critic rating, a small image of a movie poster, production cost vs. box office revenue numbers, and a summary. In the movie info screen there are other tabs for YouTube, Wikipedia and iTunes so you can hop to sites to get all sorts of info about your selection.

While you have the Info tab open, don't forget to use the check boxes at the bottom. There are three: Want To See, Seen It and the Buy/Rent button.  At the top right there is a small star you can touch to indicate the movie as one of your favorites.

Speaking of your favorites, here's how to access your personal list: From the MovieQuest main screen, touch the folder with a star on it (upper right corner).  This will take you to the My Movies screen. There are three lists for your personal use: Favorites, Movies I've Seen and Movies I Want To See.  These will be populated with anything you tagged while browsing the database.

Is it contagious?

Unfortunately, there is no search feature and no way to change how the categories are sorted, and the Cult Classics category is conspicuously missing. I could not find a couple of my personal favorites because they did not appear on any of the canned lists (Buckaroo Banzai anyone?). Being able to search by movie title, actor(s) or keywords would be a great help, especially when the iPod can pull information from the internet via the wi-fi connection (IMDB perhaps?). In lieu of Cult Classics, you get an entry dedicated to Silent Movies (90 of them on the list). In the Best Movies by Theme section, there are 19 entries under the heading Body Switch Movies. I'm not sure I need a category dedicated to what amounts to a seldom-used plot device.

However, if you are a movie trivia junkie, there is a category for Movie Awards. In this category you can get your movie geek on all the way to movies that scored a Best Sound Editing award. The ability to get to clips and Wikipedia info is pretty handy and may help win a bet or settle an argument.

Tips

  • To get your list started, make sure you scroll through all of the categories. Some movies will show up in more than one of the categories, but you only need to tag it once.
  • Once you designate a movie with any of the Want To See, Seen It or favorite tags, those indicators will show up for that movie entry everywhere in the app.
  • Be careful to scrutinize the lists because they are organized by a combination of box office success and critical acclaim; you may have to scroll for a while to find your personal favorites.
