Nokia axes 600 before it even ships
Nokia on Wednesday confirmed talk that it was cancelling the Nokia 600. The company had made "careful consideration" and decided to drop the phone before it had even started shipping. The 603 and 700 were still available for those who wanted Symbian Belle, according to the company.
While it didn't give a direct explanation, the Finnish company might have been attempting to cut out overlap in the company lineup. The 600, first shown in August, was just €30 more expensive than the 500 and €20 less than the 603, giving customers little reason to pick the mid-tier model. Carriers might also have balked at possibly having to carry three phones with only subtle differences.
The step could reflect an eagerness to swing more attention to Windows Phone. To Nokia, Symbian is an increasing liability in markets where Android and the iPhone are prevalent. Its smartphone sales dropped 38 percent year-over-year as customers either switched to Apple or Google, or else waited for Windows Phone before leaping back in.
Accordingly, plans for a Lumia 710 on T-Mobile in the Android- and iPhone-friendly US market have reportedly gone ahead. New tips given to TmoNews have the Windows Phone adaptation codenamed Sword and arriving in black or white. The phone would arrive in January, hinting that it might be shown in or near the CES expo that month.
Nokia has already hinted that its focus on the US will be on entry-level Windows Phones, where it hopes to undercut Apple and Google rather than compete directly. It has generally hinted that the focus would be on new models rather than porting over the Lumia line, although the 710 might be an attempt both to rush out some form of early competition and rebuild its US presence.
