iPhone 4S finally appears in iTunes 10.5 beta
Apple's plans for at least one new iPhone model have been solidified after checks in iTunes 10.5 beta 9. New discoveries in the .plist files by 9to5 have shown repeated references to an "iPhone 4S." A more detailed look has also given it the N94AP name that has been commonly associated with at least one future iPhone variant.
Evidence that the iPhone 4S would go dual-mode has surfaced as well. Where the current iPhone 4's entries in iTunes code are divided both by their use of CDMA and GSM in addition to color, the iPhone 4S is only split into colors. Apple has long said it would prefer to sell just one phone worldwide and could soon sell the same phone at Sprint and Verizon that it does to most other carriers.
Apple has since pulled beta 9 in what's likely a confirmation that the iPhone 4S exists. The icon associated with the phone was that of the CDMA iPhone 4 and could hint at an antenna change.
The appearance doesn't necessarily rule out a truly redesigned iPhone 5. Apple is rumored to be keeping a lone iPhone 4 version around and, if it uses a dual-mode chip, might be called iPhone 4S just to reflect its dual-mode upgrade. Without the appearance of an iPhone 5 or similar name in code, it suggests either that Apple is being extra-secretive about the true sequel or else that the new version is, externally, a mild upgrade.
