Austrians craft iPhone 5 mockup before launch

As a possible clue as to what to expect at next week's iPhone event, Austrians at Benm.at on Thursday produced a replica of the rumored new design. Basing it on the dimensions that have been used to create pre-release cases, they used real aluminum and glass. The frame logically lacks the cameras and omits the mute switch believed to sit on the other side, but it otherwise faithfully hews to the teardrop shape.

In a degree of irony, the front also bears some possibly unintentional resemblance to the Galaxy S II. A larger screen, a wider home button and a more squared off design are more reminiscent of Samsung's shape than the more rounded form of current iPhones.

Whether or not it gets close to the actual future iPhone isn't clear. Devices reportedly showing up in inventory have pointed to the possibility that it may be a conservative revision of the iPhone 4 rather than a complete remake.
