Nokia offering cash, more for Windows Phone apps
Nokia may be taking a cue from Microsoft and paying developers to support Windows Phone, sources maintained Friday. In return for agreeing to write apps, teams are said by CNN to be getting both cash incentives and extra perks. These bonuses could include the gem, being preloaded on Nokia phones, or getting prominent placement in Nokia's own Windows Phone app portal.
The company will only go on record as offering programming help and marketing.
While Windows Phone was late into its original development, Microsoft tried paying developers itself. Among the rewards were a guaranteed minimum return on an app so that they would stay in the store even if the app floundered early on. Few developers have given feedback as to how it fared, although White Noise developer Todd Moore complained of poor sales and problems even just getting it published.
Nokia is at a vulnerable point in its history as it transitions over to its first Windows Phones, the Sabre and Sea Ray. Having spent much of the past decade building up Symbian smartphones, it now has to almost completely drop its encouragement around the platform and convince developers and buyers that they should stay with Nokia on Windows Phone instead of switching to Android or iOS.
